The Partisan Sideshow Continues

Less than 24 hours after we posted on how gerrymandering has flooded California’s state government with intransigent ideological extremists, we see the consequences in action. Another year, another massive budget deficit, and yet more partisan bickering while nothing gets solved:

A legislative special session that needed bipartisan cooperation to solve California’s growing budget mess ended Tuesday in a flurry of partisan votes and finger-pointing - but no deal.

To think, the average state Assembly member won nearly 70% of his or her district’s vote. Meanwhile, the latest opinion polls say Californians approval of the state legislature is close to U.S. Congress territory. From the Fresno Bee’s blog:

The latest poll by the Public Policy Institute of California shows the approval rating of the California Legislature at 21%.

So - only one in five people think state lawmakers are worth a damn. Yet seven out of ten voters keep sending the same partisan stooges to Sacramento. Something doesn’t quite add up …
